If your teeth are severely decayed, have advanced periodontal disease or have broken in such a way that they cannot be repaired, a dental extraction might be inevitable. In other cases, teeth may need to be extracted because they are impacted or as preparation for advanced orthodontic treatment. In any case, the removal of a single tooth can start an avalanche of other problems relating to jaw alignment, shifting teeth and your ability to chew. It is important to discuss with Dr. Mirani, dentist in Beverly Hills, how the tooth’s socket will be filled before the extraction procedure is started in order to maintain proper long term oral health. Dental extraction can frighten many people; they delay the process not knowing that the delay can cause damage to the neighboring teeth, more discomfort, and cost later on. Dr. Mirani is well-known among her patients for her gentle touch and extensive care. With her experienced staff who constantly strive to create a soothing dental office enivoronment, Dr. Mirani assure that your dental extraction involves minimum discomfort and pain.
What should I expect during the Dental Extraction Process?
Dr. Mirani will first numb your tooth, jawbone and gums around the extraction area with a local anesthetic. When Dr. Mirani performs the extraction you should expect to feel a lot of pressure because the root portion of a tooth is firmly encased in bone, called the socket. The tooth is tightly bound into place by a ligament and during the extraction process Dr. Mirani will need to expand the socket (widen and enlarge it) in order to separate the tooth from the ligament to a point where it is loose and free to come out. This process is initiated by using specific tools to rock the tooth back and forth.
With Dr. Mirani's subtle way of procedure, you should not feel any pain as the anesthetic has numbed the nerves to a point that there is no transference of pain.
If a tooth will not release from the socket it may require sectioning. Sometimes the root is curved in the socket and the socket cannot expand enough for the tooth to be removed. In these cases Dr. Mirani will have to cut the tooth into sections and remove each portion individually. Once the tooth is removed a blood clot will form in the extraction socket. The blood clot is an important part of the healing process and it is important not to do anything that will dislodge it. Dry socket (no blood clot) may form if the blood clot is dislodged which causes moderate to severe pain and can significantly delay the healing process. After a tooth has been extracted there will be a resulting hole in your jawbone where the tooth was. In time, this will smooth and fill in with bone. This process can take many weeks or months. However after 1- 2 weeks you should no longer notice any inconvenience.
