Problems with Wisdom Teeth

Problems with Wisdom TeethThe third molars, or final molars to erupt in the mouth, are frequently called wisdom teeth. Most people get their wisdom teeth in their late teens and early 20s. Some people never get wisdom teeth, but most people have between one and four wisdom teeth erupt. In some cases, wisdom teeth can become impacted. This means that the tooth or teeth did not fully erupt or did not erupt properly. Our Beverly Hills dentist recommends that impacted wisdom teeth be extracted to reduce the risk to gums and adjacent teeth.

Impacted wisdom teeth can be very difficult to keep clean, and the plaque that accumulates on them contains dangerous oral bacteria that can decay teeth and cause gum disease. Once these bacteria enter the bloodstream, they can trigger systemic infections that may compromise the health of the heart and other major organs. In some cases, cysts can develop around the base of the tooth, and the cyst can damage the jawbone and structures surrounding the tooth.

If your wisdom teeth are not yet causing problems, you may not want to undergo extractions. Unfortunately, the longer your wisdom teeth remain in your mouth, the more difficult they can become to remove if they do need to be extracted at a later date. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation recommends that wisdom teeth be thoroughly evaluated in order to ensure better outcomes and reduce the incidence of periodontal disease, infections, cavities, cysts and damage to other teeth.
