Dr. Mirani, Beverly Hills Dentist, recommends a thorough teeth cleaning every 6 months in order to maintain a satisfactory level of oral hygiene. Regular teeth cleanings is not only an important component in helping your teeth and gums stay healthy, but it is also an excellent way to monitor the development of negative changes in your mouth before they become so problematic that they result in more costly dental procedures.
Why is it important to maintain a satisfactory level of oral healthcare?
Dr. Mirani believes that being a dentist goes beyond the responsibilities of fixing and maintaining teeth. Gums, teeth and tongue are also windows into health of a patient’s entire body. Teeth cleanings and regular checkup give the doctor an opportunity to give the patient advanced warnings if there is an indication other health issues may be occurring in the body. Early signs of gum disease are often indications that the patient might be suffering from important health issues such as: heart problems, kidney disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, preterm labor, and cancer. So it is important to have Dr. Mirani check your teeth and gums on a regular basis in order to determine if there are potentially other health issues going on inside your body.
What happens during a Teeth Cleaning?
Dr. Mirani’s dental team at the Beverly Hills office will ask you to update them on any changes in your overall medical condition and if you have noticed any changes or pain in your mouth. They will then examine your teeth and gums looking for signs of discoloration, irritation, chips or potential cavities. They make notes in your file and make sure to discuss any apparent issues with Dr. Mirani.
Dr. Mirani or one of her dental team members then begins cleaning your teeth by removing dental plaque (a naturally occurring biofilm created by colonizing bacteria trying to attach to a smooth surface) and tarter (yellow calculus formed when the dental plaque is not properly cleaned). If plaque and tarter are not removed the patient may experience gum disease, gingivitis, cavities and possibly other long term health issues such as heart disease.
Special tools are used by Dr. Mirani or her dental team to clean the plaque and tarter without damaging the teeth. An ultrasonic device is used to remove the harder deposits. This device emits a wave of vibrations to shake the tarter loose. Once the major debris is cleared more precise tools such as scalers are used to scrape away the smaller deposits until each tooth is entirely clean. Now the teeth have to be polished and smoothed to make it difficult for the bacteria to re-attach to the tooth.
Polishing occurs with the use of small hand held devise with a soft rubber cap that spins on the end. A special gritty toothpaste called prophylaxis is applied to the tooth and friction of the rotating rubber cap makes each tooth shiny and smooth. Once the process is complete, Dr. Mirani will perform a thorough examination and make any necessary treatment recommendations.
X-rays are sometimes recommended as a way of determining if any surface abnormalities are actually signs of more serious conditions existing under the gum line, inside the tooth or on the jawbone.
